Happy Birthday Grandmaster Yang Zhenduo!

On August 9th, Grandmaster Yang Zhenduo celebrated his 95th birthday with a small gathering of family and friends. While there was not a large gathering planned due to COVID-19, he loved receiving all the many letters and videos that everyone sent from around the world with birthday wishes. The International Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association (YFTC) is pleased to present the Yang Family Tai Chi International Junzheng Online Cup (YFTC iJOC) in collaboration with the “Junzheng Cup” Global Tai Chi Online Competition.

The “Junzheng Cup” Global Tai Chi Online Competition is an event created through a partnership of wushu and cultural organizations in China to promote the special role tai chi chuan has in improving health to help defeat the COVID-19 pandemic. It is not a tai chi chuan competition or tournament in the conventional sense. Participants are to submit videos of themselves performing specified tai chi forms which are first scored by a panel of judges and then voted on by the publicThe goal is to have a fun event that lifts peoples' spirits, keeps them involved with tai chi chuan, and celebrates different styles of Yang style tai chi. Yang Family Tai Chi is a co-organizer of this competition.

More information about this event, including rules & regulations, and how to submit your video, can be found on our web page.

Reason for the Name: Junzheng Online Cup

The scenic area of Pu Zhehei is located in Yunnan Province, about 300 km southeast of Kunming. Pu Zhehei is a popular tourist destination and attracts thousands of tourists each year who are attracted to its beautiful natural scenery. "Pu Zhehei" in the Yi language, means "a place abundant with fish and shrimp".  The area is known for its green karst landforms, mountains, and lakes.

The Junzheng Tai Chi Garden is a 21-acre site that is currently being renovated. It will include a hotel, restaurants, a training space (gym), soccer field, tai chi plaza, and more. Junzheng Tai Chi Garden will also be the site of a future Yang Family Tai Chi education training base. Our online tai chi cup event is named after this location.

The following video will give you an overview of the beautiful area of Pu Zhehei and the Junzheng Tai Chi Garden, home of our future training base!

Students from the Yang Family Tai Chi Center in Kunming went on a field trip to Pu Zheihei to see the area and the Junzheng Tai Chi Garden.

Inspiration!

Jean Cauchon, an association member from Shawinigan, Quebec in Canada, has been practicing tai chi since 1989 and Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan since 2000. In January, he could no longer stand on his right leg because his hip was damaged from osteoarthritis. He needed hip replacement surgery, but because of COVID-19 the surgery was delayed until July. He wanted to be in good health for his surgery and to recover more easily from it. To keep active, he began practicing the 16 Form and 103 Form sitting on a chair. With time, he found seated tai chi a pleasure to do and felt that he continued to receive health benefits from the practice. The upper body movements helped stimulate his heart, lungs, and other organs and improve blood flow. Seated tai chi practice also helped keep his mind calm when he felt nervous about his upcoming surgery.

Two weeks after his operation in July, Jean was able to start gradually resuming his seated tai chi practice. It will be about 6 months until he will be able to practice standing tai chi again and he appreciates that seated tai chi helps keep his body active and mind calm. He wants everyone to know that even with physical limitation, you can still practice tai chi and receive its health benefits.

Thank you for sharing your story, Jean! We wish you a quick recovery and good health!
