What Is the Duan Wei System?
The Chinese Wushu Duan Wei System is China’s official national ranking system for traditional Chinese martial arts. It
evaluates practitioners on technical skill, theory, ethics (Wude), and overall proficiency, rather than competition results
alone. The system is administered under the authority of the Chinese Wushu Association.
Examination Structure
Elementary Duan (1st–3rd Duan)
• Etiquette & Ethics: Baoquan salute and Wushu moral conduct (Wude)
• Technical Exam: Solo routines matching 1st–3rd Duan movement quantity and difficulty
1. Official Duan Wei routines
2. National promotion routines
3. Elementary competition routines
4. Approved style-specific routines
Intermediate Duan (4th–6th Duan)
• Written Theory Exam: Basic Wushu theory
• Technical Exam: Solo routines matching 4th–6th Duan movement quantity and difficulty
1. Official Duan Wei routines
2. National promotion routines
3. Intermediate or advanced competition routines
4. Approved style-specific routines
Advanced Duan (7th–8th Duan)
• Technical Exam: One barehand routine + one weapon routine (not lower than 6th Duan level)
• Written Theory Exam (closed book)
• Interview & Oral Defense
• Comprehensive Review: Ethics, skill, teaching ability, achievements, and social contribution
Rank Placement for International Participants
International participants may apply directly for an appropriate Duan level without holding all lower ranks, provided that:
• The performed routine matches the required technical difficulty
• All examination components are passed
• Required documentation is submitted
Placement is based on demonstrated skill, not years of training alone.
