Anna first dipped her toes into taijiquan in her twenties at a class in a Los Angeles park. Decades later, in 2010, she signed up for an adult-ed tai chi class to help rehab a broken leg. Her leg quickly recovered, and through the guidance and example of her teacher, Mike Shunney, she realized that taiji offered much more, and she’s been deepening her understanding and experience of its pleasures, benefits, and mysteries ever since.
Anna studies taijiquan and qigong with Mike Shunney at Inner Works Center in Rockland, Maine. Since 2016, she has attended yearly seminars with Grandmaster Yang Jun in bare-hand, push-hands, sword, and saber forms, and lately with Audi Peal and Bill Walsh in push-hands. She was awarded Yang Family Gold Eagle Rank 3 in 2024. She’s also studied Wudang style taiji and qigong with Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) since 2014.
Anna has been teaching taijiquan and qigong since 2019. A professional singer and voice teacher, she was delighted to discover that taiji and qigong share many principles and practices with the art of singing. She tries to use her understanding and experience of both arts to enhance the teaching of each other. Anna worked as an independent composer, singer, and theater artist in New York City from the 1980s until she moved full-time to Maine in 2009. She has also been deeply involved in movement arts throughout her life, including studies with Anna Halprin at the San Francisco Dancer’s Workshop and Kinetic Awareness with Elaine Summers in New York.
Anna teaches ongoing outdoor classes twice a week at the amphitheater of the Camden, Maine, Public Library.
